New Year's Day fly and Club fly « Result #1 on Dec 28, 2009, 8:16am »
We've got some flying of kites to do this weekend to bring in the new year. Friday, weather permitting, we'll have our New Year's Day fly. It should be at the flat, but since the flats have been under water a lot lately, it may have to be moved. You might drop by one of the kite shops on your way out and check with them where we're at for sure. We may have to move it to the beach.
Our regularly scheduled club fly is this Sat., so we'll get two days to get out and play. Again, if the flats are bad, check at the kite shop to see where we move to. Keep your fingers crossed that the flats are usable. We need to have our first kite fly without the leaning tower to check it out.

I just got this information on a new festival they're putting together in Sugar Land. I know most of us will be working hard getting ready for the SPI Kite Fest, but if any of you might be interested and can make it up there, I'm posting the info about it.
Donna -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello! We are about to have our 1st Cultural Kite Festival at the new Sugar Land Memorial Park on Saturday January 16, 2010. We are currently looking for teachers/demonstrators and moderators for our event and would like to know if you or your group would be interested in participating?
It will be basically activities and entertainment that will include an opening ceremony of kites, a small kite museum showcasing the diversified history of kite making, kite flying lessons and competitions and various cultural performances.
This will be a great promotional event for your group! We estimate about 5000-7000 people in attendance just as our other events has proved similar record breaking numbers.
Please visit our website http://www.sugarlandtx.gov/ to view images and videos on our previous events such as the: Dog Park Opening at Sugar Land Memorial Park, Annual Tree Lighting Event in Town Square and the Red, White & Blue Fest at Oyster Creek Park.
If you are interested, please let me know and I can provide you with more information to get you booked for this event.
I hope to hear from you soon,

Hope everyone is getting their plans made for the 2010 SPI Kite Fest, January 30-31. The new event added to this is the indoor kite fly which will be Friday night, Jan. 29, which will be at the Boys & Girls club in Port Isabel.
For some entertainment, I've uploaded some pics of some SPIKE members giving indoor flying a try. It's on youtube at:
Make sure you get ahold of B&S Kites for tickets to the indoor fly, reservations for the Rev Clinic if you're interested, or reservations to make kites with the Vogel on Friday afternoon. Also reserve your banquet tickets for Sat. night.

If you don't like the weather in Texas, just wait a day. That was true this weekend. With the front blowing through on Friday bringing snow to Houston and Austin and sleet to Rockport and rain to the Valley, we were all questioning if the Great Texas Kite Club Party would happen. But seeing the forecast for Sat. saying how beautiful it would be, a few of us got brave and headed to Rockport. The Shamrocks from Houston drove through the snow and were glad to see it clear when they got to Rockport. The Vogels left early Friday morning with the threat of freezing temperatures during the nighttime, and got to Rockport in time to see the sleet there. The Austin group felt it was safer not to try the trip. Jeff and I kept our fingers crossed since we couldn't leave until later Friday, and we were lucky. It was clear and no icy roads at all. Yea!!!
We all met up at the Sugar Shack and had some chile and some chile con queso and warmed up and visited a while, then we were off to our hotels to rest up for the next day. Sat. we all bundled up in layers for a cold start to the morning, high 30s low 40s. But as we began launching kites, we all warmed up and started pulling layers off. The wind stayed pretty light all day, so we all started pulling out our light wind kites that usually don't see much air time.
This year Dano moved this event to go along with the Rockport Tropical Christmas Festival. There were activities going on downtown throughout the day. People would drive around our field checking out the display. Some would brave the chilly temperature and get out to take pics and visit a bit, then they were off to the next activity.
About 3 p.m. it started cooling back down again and the wind started dying down. So as the kites slowly drifted to the ground on their on, we began packing away our toys and headed to the Chinese Buffet for a great dinner. We came back to the park just in time for the lighted Christmas parade and an awesome fireworks display. What a great ending to the day.
Sunday morning we got up to some light rain and were glad it held off a day. As we headed south, we found the sun again and the extreme windy conditions that we're so used to.
Mark your calendars for the first Sat. in December for next year and join us for the fun. Hopefully there won't be a cold front with snow and sleet coming our way two years in a row ;-)

GREAT TEXAS KITE CLUB FUN FLY
Just a reminder note to all area kite fliers and kite supporters that this event has been moved up from last years date to December 5th this year. This is an invitational fun fly from those of us in Coastal Bend Skypirates to all Texas Kite Clubs to "come on down" for some mild weather winter wind fun. This summer a poll was taken to see if potential attendees preferred a early December date to coordinate with the season opening events put on by the City of Rockport who asked our club to fly kites for the event. The December date actually works better than mid January and the weather will be much improved!!!
So will the activities --- Again the City has leased the festival grounds at the entrance to the beach for large kite flying displays and demos-adjacent areas are available as well if we get "crowded air traffic control". This is in conjunction with the holiday season opening parades, (land and lighted boat that night) tree lighting ceremony, street party with music and food offerings etc. There is a potential here to be very entertaining event with all these activities in one small area, the Heritage District in downtown Rockport.
Information is posted on calendars of the yahoo groups sites of the following kite clubs -- Cloud Chasers,-- Austin SHARKS, -- Houston SPIKE,-- South Texas TACO, -- San Antonio and Skypirates, -- Gulf Coast, www.skypiratesonline.org <http://www.skypiratesonline.org/>
this info can be forwarded to you if needed -- send your request to : wickedrevs56@yahoo.com subject line GTKFF will grab our attention
